With Clean Monday the Great Lent begins for Orthodox Christianity, and it also means the end of the carnival (the Carnival Season). It is called Clean Monday because Christians are “cleansed” spiritually and physically. It is a day of fasting but also a public holiday. The fasting lasts for 40 days, which were the same as the days of Christ’s fast in the desert. It is celebrated 48 days before the Sunday of the Resurrection of Christ, the Christian Easter.

At Church, Clean Monday—and thus Lent itself—begins on the preceding (Sunday) night, at a special service called Forgiveness, at which all attendants will bow down before one another and ask forgiveness. In this way, faithful people begin Lent with a clean conscience, with forgiveness, and with renewed Christian love.

Mrs Sarakosti, that is an old custom, our grand mothers were making with flour and water.

For an ornament they put on her head a cross but they forgot her mouth because she was fasting for a long time.

And they were counting her days with her seven feet. They were cutting one per week till Easter to come.

Traditionally Greeks spend this day outdoors, in the countryside, flying kites and eating lagana, an unleavened bread made only that day, tarama, halva, seafood, vegetables, olives and bean soup. Believers on this day do not use olive oil in their food.

Each region of Greece has its own customs, but in all regions people fly the kite.

Clean Monday is a Public Holiday and this day’s wish is KALA KULUMA!!!
